GB women in the year-end rankings : 1975 onwards

data for men only data for men and women combined
The no. of ranked players in the last column below gives some idea of the increase in global depth of the women's game since
the 1970s (when Americans, Australians and Britons made up the vast majority of ranked players) and hence how much harder
it is to reach the top 10, top 50 and top 100 these days - this should be borne in mind when comparing with the distant past.
YEAR Best GB No 1 Top 10 Top 50 Top 100 Top 200 Top 500 Date Based on Ranked
N.B. No nationalities are shown on the 1975-77 lists so I may have missed some British players in those years Players
Also GRB/GBR not searchable on the pre-1990 pdfs, so safest to assume top 200/500 figures may be +/- 1

* : Using a 31 Dec year-end, Katie would have been year-end GB no. 1 instead of Anne in 2007 and Elena instead of Katie in 2009.
Currently, the WTA deem the year-end rankings to be those for the Monday after the Tournament of Champions rather than
the rankings as at 31 Dec but this has varied in the past. The above table reflects the rankings as at the date on the ranking
list the WTA has put at the archive link for that year. I am not sure whether all of these even follow the WTA's own rules for
what constitutes the year-end (e.g. I find it hard to believe that they deemed 2004 and 2006 to end in December when they
have used November for every other year from 2001 onwards), but going with the dates used for their archive links is the
only way I can think of to be consistent with the WTA over all previous years, so that is the convention I have gone with.
